APP Waterproofing Membrane

Waterproofing membranes are designed to protect a surface from the perils of leakage. Water penetration and leakage, if neglected, can have disastrous consequences for a structure. A waterproofing membrane acts as a protective layer which can be applied either on the roof, retaining walls or basement of a structure. There are different types of waterproofing membranes which can be broadly classified as sheet-based membranes and liquid-based membranes. Sheet-based membranes are in the form of rolls whereas liquid applied waterproofing membranes come in the form of liquid that can be sprayed on the surface. Bituminous waterproofing membrane is one of the most common sheet-based membranes. This article discusses the APP waterproofing membrane – one of the most popular and high utility bituminous membranes, highly regarded for its applications on the roof. Let’s understand what this membrane is and why is it so popular.

What is an APP waterproofing membrane?

APP stands for Atactic Polypropylene. APP membrane is the most commonly used waterproofing material on concrete roofs and low-slope roofs. APP membrane is applied to asphalts with a torch. Applications of APP membranes aren’t limited to just roofs. Man made ponds, bathrooms, water tanks, curtain walls, concrete channels can be protected against water ingress with APP waterproofing membrane. APP membrane is a durable waterproofing material largely preferred by contractors for safeguarding surfaces against leakage.

Features of APP membrane

Terraces and roofs are directly exposed to rains, highly increasing the chances of a leakage. Applying APP waterproofing membrane serves as an excellent barrier against water penetration, thanks to its many useful features. The most important features of APP that makes it a popular choice for waterproofing applications include the following:

  1. APP membranes are characterized by high tensile strength. Tensile strength refers to the amount of stress that can be applied before a material breaks under tension.
  2. APP membranes are 100% impermeable, ruling out any chances of leakage after applying on the chosen surface.
  3. These are resistant to weathering. APP membranes are durable and won’t succumb to changing climatic conditions which is absolutely a must-have feature for a waterproofing material.
  4. APP membranes possess isotropic properties. Isotropic properties mean that the materials in the membrane won’t change properties in response to a change in direction.
  5. Seam integrity is another important feature of the APP membrane along with providing outstanding bondability.
  6. These membranes provide flexibility at low temperatures and dimensional stability at high temperatures.
  7. APP membranes are more easy to apply under hot-melt conditions.

Different types of waterproofing membranes

Besides APP waterproofing membranes, there are several others with a range of features, benefits and applications. Let’s have a look at the different types of waterproofing membranes available.

Self-adhesive modified bituminous membrane

These are membranes made of polymers, asphalt and tackifiers. Fiberglass, polyester or sometimes a combination of both the materials are used to give strength to this membrane. A release film or paper protects the self-adhesive layer in this type of waterproofing membrane. The paper is to be discarded at the time of installation.

Polymer modified bitumen membrane

Polymer modified bitumen is one of the most popular waterproofing materials. The material provides excellent flow resistance in hot conditions and withstands atmospheric changes. There is a polymer film both on top and bottom of the material. Polymer modified bitumen membrane materials make for a good underlay in pitched roofs and resists diffusion of moisture.

Pros of APP bitumen membrane

It comes as no surprise that the APP bitumen has been around for a few decades considering the multiple benefits it has to offer. Bitumen when modified with APP makes for a strong and versatile waterproofing material. Listed below are the key benefits of APP membrane:

  1. The absence of seams in APP membranes guarantees 100% protection against leakage.
  2. It offers enhanced bitumen performance with excellent UV resistance
  3. Rapid changes in temperature have no effect on this waterproofing material’s efficiency.
  4. APP bitumen waterproofing possesses fire resistant properties coupled with improved flow resistance at high temperatures.
  5. These are excellent for applications in cold areas as even the coldest temperatures can’t inflict damage on this waterproofing material.
  6. Flexibility is an important feature as waterproofing materials are prone to damage from direct exposure to the atmosphere. APP scores high on flexibility as it is proven to survive storms and harsh atmospheric conditions with no damage such as cracks or dents.
  7. Several manufacturers offer warranties lasting for 10-20 years for APP membranes. By opting for an APP waterproofing membrane, you stand to gain from warranty protection.
  8. It offers optimum adhesion and elasticity and is excellent for protecting commercial buildings.

Cons of APP membrane

Though APP waterproofing membrane offers numerous advantages, there are also some disadvantages to it. Listed below are a few cons of using APP membrane:

  1. APP waterproofing membrane won’t work well with all surfaces.
  2. Your roof must have a draining system for this waterproofing material to work effectively.
  3. In the absence of a draining system, the standing water will penetrate and wear down the material.
  4. APP waterproofing membrane isn’t recommended for rooftop patios.

6 key factors to consider for waterproofing membrane application

For best results from waterproofing membranes, one needs to be careful about how it is applied. A lot of the problems arise as a result of negligence and lack of knowledge about the most ideal way to apply waterproofing materials. A minor flaw or oversight could render the waterproofing material completely useless. Listed below are a few things to keep in mind during application of waterproof membrane:
  1. It is important to ensure that the coating materials are resistant to abrasion while being accommodative of building movement. When membranes are applied too thin with unbonded screeds applied over it, mechanical abrasion is bound to happen. Ruptures and blisters are common outcomes of mechanical abrasion.
  2. The bond breaker junctions become incapable of accommodating movement when waterproofing is applied under a screed. The coating movement is restricted by the compacted screed when releasing from the bond breaker. To tackle this, one needs to put a foam rod to the perimeters prior to applying the screed. If the ideal Dry Film Thickness (DFT) is not achieved, movement accommodation may get more difficult.
  3. It is important to consider the DFT as there are consequences to both thicker and thinner coatings. A coating with even DFT is restricted from stretching.
  4. Different circumstances demand varying ranges of DFT. Wall applications in wet areas may demand 0.6-1 mm DFT whereas floor applications may require 1-1.3 mm DFT. Depending on the coating material, a DFT of 1.5-2 mm may be needed for podiums and balconies whereas pools, pits and planter boxes require DFT of 2-3 mm minimum.
  5. Three coats are necessary in case of low viscosity coatings to achieve the optimal WFT (Wet Film Thickness) and DFT.
  6. Thin coatings give rise to abrasive damage whereas thick coatings result in re-emulsification and splitting. Substrates must be prepared with utmost care to ensure desired thickness for optimal performance.
The weather conditions and the surface need to be taken into account while applying waterproofing membrane. It is also important to get a good applicator if you want to achieve best results. Keeping the above factors in mind will immensely help increase the performance of waterproof coatings.

Difference between SBS and APP

SBS and APP both are bitumen modified waterproofing materials. But what’s the difference between the both? Let’s discuss in detail so you can make an informed decision.

APP bitumen is plastic asphalt whereas SBS bitumen is elastic asphalt. The type of bitumen modifier used in SBS is synthetic rubber whereas the one used in APP is plastic. Here are a few key differences between both presented for better understanding:

1. Low temperature flexibility for SBS: -22o F to -5o F

Low temperature flexibility for APP: 14o F to 32o F

2. Softening point for SBS: 230o F to 270o

     Softening point for APP: 245o F to 300o F

3. Elongation with full recovery for SBS: >1000%

Elongation with full recovery for APP:  5-10%

4. Serviceability range for SBS: -20o F to 270o F

     Serviceability range for APP: 15o F to 300o F

When torched, APP membranes will turn into something similar to candle wax as it crosses temperatures above 300o F. The bitumen will flow like a free-flowing liquid that can be mopped across the surface. It exhibits high temperature tolerance during the heating process.

SBS on the other hand possess different properties than that of APP. SBS, unlike APP, won’t flow when heated. It is rather sticky and the stickiness is directly proportional to the amount of heat applied. SBS however is more flexible in comparison to APP. SBS will start flowing like liquid when subjected to more heat but that however means it is overheated.

Application process

Before applying APP waterproofing, it is necessary to ensure that the surface is free of any oils or chemicals. It is recommended to use a primer on the application surface. A welding torch is used to maintain 10 cm overtopping for joints and 15 cm overtopping for ends. With a trowel, the mineral stone that coats the surface on joints is heated and the minerals are buried into the bituminous surface before the joints are welded together. Membrane installation starts from the lowest point of the slope and progresses to the highest point. The substrate and underside are torched. When the shiny bitumen surface is exposed after the underside heating of the membrane, the membrane is rolled forward. The membrane is pressed firmly against the substrate for superior bonding. Once the torching process of the membrane starts, it shouldn’t be lifted or shifted. The overlaps are then pressed into the seam with a trowel. While maintaining the side and end overlaps, a round tip trowel is used to smoothen the bitumen produced at the seams. Special care should be taken to seal angles and abutments. The last step is to seal the edges into the grooves.

Buying Asphalt Roof Shingles – Life Expectancy, Benefits and More https://www.shibamventures.com/guide-buy-asphalt-roof-shingles/ Thu, 11 Nov 2021 17:14:50 +0000 https://www.shibamventures.com/?p=5337

Roof leaks are a serious cause for concern during monsoons. But the good thing is that they can be easily prevented by installing high-quality shingles that don’t easily crack. That’s why asphalt roof shingles are so popular.

Asphalt roof shingles protect homes through decades of weathering and requires very basic maintenance. These age-old roofing solutions are easy to install and easily available throughout the country and in hundreds of colours and styles. However, getting a new roof is not as easy as it sounds. Homeowners shouldn’t choose asphalt shingles just because they’re affordable. It is important to select one that is long-lasting, durable and value for money.

If you’re interested in installing new asphalt shingles on your roof shingles, then here’s the ultimate guide to selecting one.

What are Shingles?

Before we dive into asphalt shingles, let’s learn about roofing shingles in general. Shingles are typically flat pieces of roofing materials. They come in rolls, stacks, or sheets. Shingles can be made of asphalt, composite, wood, or other roofing materials. They’re uniform in composition and design, so they provide full roof coverage. Shingles are the most economical option for roofing contractors as it’s very cost-effective to manufacture, install, and replace them. Anyone with prior experience with roofing structures can install shingle roofing. They come in many colours, textures, and materials. Here are the common types of modern-day shingles –
  • Architectural Shingles
  • Metal Roof Shingles
  • Fibreglass Shingles
  • Solar Shingles
  • Composite Plastic Roof Shingles
  • Rubber Roof Shingles
  • Slate Shingles
  • Wood Shingles
  • Asphalt Shingles

What are Asphalt Shingles?

Asphalt shingles are shingles made of asphalt, a black/brown petroleum-like building material. Asphalt is obtained by distilling petroleum. It contains compounds of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulphur. Asphalt is most commonly used as a roofing cover building material. It’s inexpensive and has been in use for ages in the roofing industry. Almost every colonial or rustic estate home, bungalow, or villa in the world features asphalt roofing shingles. These shingles suit all types of homes. Plus, top sellers of asphalt roofing shingles can manufacture different types of shingles with different features, appearances, textures, and qualities. The asphalt roofing industry is estimated to be valued at over $136 billion by 2027. Why do asphalt roofing shingles continue to be the go-to solution for property owners? They make homes look unique while providing optimal weather protection. Different types of asphalt shingles offer different types of advantages. Let’s explore them.

What are the Different Types of Asphalt Shingles?

When you’re shopping for asphalt shingles (or any roofing solution), you must assess three key factors – costs, warranties, and lifespan. Here’s how the three types of asphalt shingles match upon these factors:
  • 3-Tab Asphalt Shingles:

These shingles have a distinctive look. Each 3-tab shingle has three uniform cuts (boxes or tabs). The three cuts look like three separate pieces once installed on the roof – but they are single pieces. When laid flat on the roof, the network of 3-tab shingles looks very distinguished and consistent. These are the cheapest asphalt shingles in the market. With proper installation and maintenance, 3-tab shingle roofing systems can easily last 25+ years.
  • Dimensional Asphalt Shingles:

These shingles are also called laminated or architectural shingles in the roofing industry. Unlike regular 3-tab asphalt shingles, dimensional shingles look random and unique. Although there isn’t anything wrong with 3-tab shingle roofing systems, they can make the roof look repetitive or dull. With dimensional shingles, you get two layers of fused shingle materials that look unique. They cost slightly more than 3-tab shingle roofing systems.
  • Luxury Asphalt Shingles:

Typically, any shingle that’s made to look like wood, slate, or other expensive material is called “luxury.” They’re larger than 3-tab and architectural asphalt shingles and also cost more. That’s why roofing contractors typically offer extended, prorated warranties with these systems. Luxury asphalt shingles are the ‘heavyweights’ of this category. Homeowners who want the best dimensionality and designs on their roofs should consider investing in luxury asphalt roofing shingles.

Why are Asphalt Shingles So Popular?

Asphalt shingle roofing systems have been popular since the early 20th century. In the past, it was the only fire-resistant roofing material that was also economical. Over the years, homeowners have appreciated the aesthetic qualities and the long-term value of these roofing systems. Which type of asphalt roofing shingle is the most popular? In the roofing industry, the “standard” asphalt shingles are 3-tab shingles. However, all types of asphalt shingles offer many added benefits, whether they’re coated or not. Here are the key advantages homeowners enjoy after investing in asphalt roofing shingles.

Advantages of Asphalt Roofing Shingles

In 2021, labour shortages have impacted many industries – including the roofing industry. This unprecedented side effect of the COVID19 pandemic has resulted in increased demands for construction materials and workers. That’s why, currently, the main advantage of investing in asphalt roofing shingles is cost-efficiency. Other roofing materials may be harder to install and subsequently cost more. With asphalt roofing shingles, homeowners know exactly what they’re buying – high performance, low-cost, and weather-resistant roofing materials. In the long run – wood, slate, or metal roofing doesn’t offer the same cost-efficiency as asphalt roofing systems. Some key benefits of asphalt roofing shingles include the following:
  • Energy Efficiency:

You don’t need to buy solar shingles to make your roof more energy-efficient. When you install an asphalt shingle roofing system, you also have to get thermal insulation installed. This insulation will prevent cold or hot air from entering or exiting your attic throughout the year. This feature of asphalt roofing comes especially handy during the winter and summer months. Buy asphalt shingles with light tones to increase your roof’s ability to reflect the sun’s UV rays.

  • Aesthetic Appeal:

Asphalt roofing shingles have been around for ages. Over the years, a wide variety of asphalt roofing shingles have hit and left the market. Currently, these roofing materials are available in a medley of colours, designs, and styles. Want a sequoia or cedarwood roof but can’t afford it? Select asphalt roofing shingles that mimic those roofs! Homeowners also get to pick from flat, uniform, rectangular, and other asphalt shingle shapes. Some homeowners use overlapping asphalt shingles to create a 3D effect! Overall, homeowners can create highly aesthetic roofing systems by selecting the right shingles.

  • Straightforward Installation and Maintenance:

Asphalt roofs require very little upkeep or repair. It’s important for homeowners to check on their asphalt roofing systems every few months, especially after storms. But, most high-quality asphalt roofing shingles are wind-resistant. Even on steep or angled roofs, they don’t break easily. The ease of installation also contributes to the low cost of these shingles. Installers don’t overcharge or take too much time to set up asphalt roofing systems.

  • Wind and Impact-Rated:

If your region experiences severe winds and weather conditions, buy wind and impact-rated asphalt shingles. These impact-rated asphalt roofing shingles have amazing durability. They can even help homeowners obtain certain reductions in their home insurance plans! More importantly, winds almost never lift up these shingles. The risk of rainwater sneaking in underneath these shingles and creating leaks is minimal. Top reputed sellers of asphalt roofing shingles send their products through severe impact and wind resistance tests.

  • Antibacterial Qualities:

Bacterial and pest infestations are serious concerns for everyone in the roofing industry. Due to improper cleaning and maintenance, many roofing systems prematurely lose their quality. Algae, mould, and other infestations ruin their structural integrities. The most common victims of bacterial degeneration are wooden shingles. On the contrary, asphalt roofing shingles are designed to be bacteria-resistant. Ever noticed the bacterial growths that leave ugly black stains on roofs? With bacteria-resistant asphalt roofing shingles, the risk of having such undesirable growths on your roof is minimal. Both asphalt shingles and the underlayment have built-in bacterial resistance qualities. Hence, the overall appearance of asphalt roofing shingles doesn’t diminish easily with time.

  • Fireproof:

The fire-resistant nature of asphalt roofing shingles has long attracted property owners and roofing contractors. Most types and grades of asphalt roofing shingles have the highest fire ratings compared to other roofing materials. Getting a roof with a Class A fire-resistance rating is every property owner’s responsibility. Asphalt roofing shingles prevent the penetration of fire inside the house from external fire hazards. They also halt the spread of fire indoors.

  • Sound-Efficient:

Nothing’s worse than living under a metal roof during hailstorms. The constant streams of external noises from the water drops hitting the metal can irk anyone. Thankfully, asphalt roofing shingles are relatively sound-free. They don’t sound loud during large downpours. These shingles even insulate sound and help create noise-free internal spaces.

  • Easy Integration with Existing Roof Features:

Asphalt roof shingles can be installed around chimneys, skylights, and all types of roofs. These shingles are so flexible – roofers don’t need to uninstall all of them to add or modify new features. On the other hand, metal or wooden roofs typically need to be uninstalled completely for repair and maintenance work.

  • Eco-Friendly:

Gone are the days when old, damaged asphalt roofing shingles would be directly dumped inside landfills. Asphalt roofing wastes are valuable materials in the roofing industry. Roofers uninstall old asphalt shingles and send them to repurposing centres. Here, the asphalt shingles are treated and used for various purposes. They can be repurposed into new roofing systems or other products. For instance, many road construction companies use low-cost recycled asphalt to build or fix roads. Since asphalt roofing shingles are made of petroleum, they can also be melted to generate electricity. Overall, this roofing material is pretty eco-friendly and sustainable.

Life Expectancy of Asphalt Roofing Shingles – Which One Should You Choose?

When investing in a new roofing system, there are many important factors homeowners must take into consideration. The quality of the roofing materials, the design of the home, and maintenance requirements are all vital factors to consider. Homeowners must also review their regional weather conditions to ensure their roofing material is up to the task. Asphalt roofing shingles meet all these factors. They’re low-maintenance, easy to install (irrespective of the home design) and last at least 20 years. Homeowners can even have their asphalt roofing shingles warrantied for up to 60 years for slightly higher premiums. Basic architectural or 3-tab asphalt roofing shingles are very good investments. Just like clay, concrete, and wooden shingles, asphalt roofing shingles last for several decades, even under extreme weather conditions. The only difference is that this customer-friendly life expectancy comes very cheap when you buy asphalt roofing shingles. This time-tested roofing material which is the choice of countless homeowners across the world is worth the pay.

Types of Waterproofing https://www.shibamventures.com/types-of-waterproofing/ Tue, 28 Sep 2021 06:33:12 +0000 https://www.shibamventures.com/?p=5044

Waterproofing is one of the most important prerequisites to maintain the structural integrity of buildings. Waterproofing is especially important in a country like India where heavy rains are a common occurrence in most states. Water usually seeps in after heavy rains causing the paint to peel off which not just ruins the aesthetic appearance but leads to mildew and a musty smell inside the house. If neglected for a long period of time, water seepage can be a threat to the health and well-being of the inhabitants.

This article throws light on some of the most important topics pertaining to waterproofing, benefits, applications, and more. By the time you finish reading this, the haze around waterproofing will clear out for you. So let’s dive straight into it.

Types Of Waterproofing

Waterproofing involves the use of different materials that act as a severe line of defence against extreme weather conditions. There are several methods of waterproofing and the below mentioned points shed light on some of the commonly used waterproof materials and their applications.

1. APP Bituminous Membranes

Source: IKOGroup

APP stands for Atactic Polypropylene. APP Polymer Bitumen Membrane is produced with the calendering process which saturates and coats the synthetic carrier with a compound made of special grade of bitumen, modified with APP polymers and fillers. The modifiers are responsible for strengthening the thermal and aging properties of the membrane compound. The mechanical characteristics of the membrane are strengthened by the Polyester carrier that contributes to tear resistance, tensile strength and elongation. This waterproofing method is ideal for applications in curtain walls, basement walls, terrace roofs, balconies, man made ponds, bathrooms, water tanks among other wet surfaces as APP Bituminous membranes are flexible and long lasting.

2. Self adhesive BTS membranes

Self adhesive membrane is characterized by self-sealing properties. Bitumen/asphalt is modified with SBS and high tack resins. A cross laminated high density polyethylene film is made to protect this self adhesive membrane. Self adhesive membrane can be installed without the use of open flames. This waterproofing material is highly resistant to acids and alkalis. Applications of self adhesive membrane include underground applications, retaining walls and planter boxes.

3. TPO membrane

TPO waterproof membrane is highly effective to achieve a leak-proof roof. TPO is short for thermoplastic polyolefin. TPO is formed when polypropylene and ethylene-propylene rubber are polymerized together. TPO is characterized by hot air welded seams that offer absolute protection against water ingress. It is a single ply roofing membrane that has uses all across the world. TPO membrane is available in different thickness and dimensions for you to choose.

4. Liquid membranes

This waterproofing method involves the use of a monolithic, fully bonded coating which forms an elastomeric waterproof membrane. There are three types of coatings namely PU based coating, acrylic elastomeric coatings and two component acrylic modified cementitious coating. PU based coatings are known to provide long lasting solutions. The coatings are applied by hand or spray. Acrylic elastomeric coatings offer protection for concrete from water infiltration as well as atmospheric gases. Two component acrylic modified cementitious coatings on the other hand can be applied with a brush, roller or trowel to prevent unwanted water penetration in concrete surfaces.

5. Bituminous products

Waterproofing with bituminous products is highly effective since bitumen is naturally insoluble in water and coatings made of bitumen serve as effective repellent against water penetration. Structures exposed to harsh environments can immensely benefit from bituminous coatings. The natural water resistant properties of bitumen coupled with strong adhesive properties offer excellent protection against water ingress.

6. Cement based waterproofing method

This is one of the easiest waterproofing methods that can be used in domestic wet areas such as bathrooms and toilets as well as water treatment plants, bridges, dams, railways and metro systems, parking structures among others.

5 Areas Of A House That Need Waterproofing

While water seepage caused due to heavy rains is easily noticeable, small amounts of moisture that find their way through poorly sealed areas can go unnoticed eventually leading to a slew of consequences like gradual weakening of the structure and collapse. The below mentioned points highlight a few important areas that need to be waterproofed without fail.

1. Bathrooms

Bathrooms are constantly exposed to water thus making it one of the areas in your house that deserve the most attention. Excess moisture and leakages are a common sight in most bathrooms. This can be prevented by waterproofing your bathroom’s walls, floor and ceiling. The gaps between the wall and floor tiles need to be sealed. A waterproof paint can protect the bathroom ceilings whereas the area behind the shower needs to have a wallboard that is suitable for moist environments and then sealed.

2. Balconies

Balconies are susceptible to water infiltration due to exposure to winds and rains. Wood framed balconies are more prone to damage in the absence of appropriate waterproofing measures. Waterproofing makes a substrate water resistant through the application of elastic and durable membranes and safeguards against mildew, mold, cracks and UV rays. Waterproofing is essential regardless of whether the structure is wood framed or concrete.

3. Kitchens

Waterproofing is extremely important in the kitchen area where counters, cabinets and backsplashes deserve special attention. Mold can quickly accumulate in the cabinet under the sink owing to leakage. Cracked countertops also contribute to dampness and water seepage. Water seepage in the kitchen can be effectively prevented with the help of surface treatments and joint sealing.

4. Basements

The basement area forms a part of the structure’s foundation and needs to be protected from water damage at all costs. Basements are frequently susceptible to dampness and flooding leading to constant build up of moisture that also spills to other parts of the structure. Waterproofing your basements can increase the utility of the total square feet area and protect your valuable belongings from dampness and humidity.

5. Roofs/terraces

A leaky roof can corrode the steel angles and beams supporting your house. Roofs must therefore be waterproofed to guarantee no water gets inside and damages your structure.

7 Key Benefits of Waterproofing

The most important and obvious benefit of waterproofing is protection against water infiltration. The steel reinforcement used in concrete construction can corrode easily if the water comes in contact with the steel. Water seepage may also cause spalling and cracking, both of which pose a threat to the structural integrity of the property. Waterproofing prevents all that from happening. But there are a few other benefits that come with investing in a good waterproofing solution. Let’s have a look at them:
  1. By protecting the structure from water infiltration, waterproofing essentially extends the life of the structure.
  2. It increases property value as the aesthetic appearance will not be compromised making it easier to impress potential buyers and negotiate a higher price.
  3. Waterproofing leads to a healthy and positive environment as dry surfaces don’t attract mold and fungi.
  4. Waterproofing also increases energy efficiency. It provides great insulation and gets rid of humid indoor air which puts a strain on coolers and air conditioners.
  5. It protects the interior work, furniture and other valuable possessions from moisture, which helps improve their longevity and retain their value.
  6. It prevents the onset of health concerns and keeps diseases like wheezing, eye infection, respiratory illnesses, coughing and skin irritation (common ill-effects of moisture build up) at bay.
  7. Waterproofing increases the overall well-being of the inhabitants by cutting down unnecessary maintenance costs and reduces stress levels.

3 Main Categories Of Waterproofing

There are three methods to ensure protection of residential basements against ground water. The British Standard 8102:2009 has laid down certain waterproofing best practices to prevent the entry of water from the ground. This serves as a guideline for contractors globally to include waterproofing measures for the structure right from the initial stages of designing and planning. Here are the three methods to ensure protection from water ingress:

1. Type A (Barrier) Protection

Barrier protection refers to the application of waterproof material to the internal or external walls and floor slab of a basement. This kind of waterproofing protection is aimed at creating an effective barrier between the structure and the groundwater. This method is also referred to as tanking. You can apply the waterproof material to the external or internal surface of the wall/floor and also in between wall or floor surfaces which is called sandwiched waterproofing.

2. Type B (Structurally Integral) Protection

Type B protection is about equipping the structure to resist water ingress. The design and materials that go into the structure are of prime importance in this method of waterproofing protection. The quality of workmanship also matters. Structures that are meant to withstand water penetration should be made of reinforced water-resistant concrete or structural steel.

3. Type C (Drained) Protection

Type C protection relies on an internal water management system to tackle the ill effects of water penetration. Groundwater is allowed to penetrate through the external wall of the structure which is collected via a Cavity Drain Membrane to divert it to a safe point of disposal in a controlled drainage system. The Cavity Drain Membrane is responsible for diverting the water into designated drainage channels.

Winding Up

Waterproofing is critical to save properties from the perils of leakage. Water leakages ruin the aesthetic appeal of a structure and lead to deterioration of indoor air quality. Investing in good waterproofing solutions can save you some crucial time and money on maintenance and repairs in the long run. Just like most specializations, waterproofing is a job best left to the experts. Types of Roofing Shingles – All You Need to Know https://www.shibamventures.com/types-of-roofing-shingles/ Mon, 27 Sep 2021 18:28:47 +0000 https://www.shibamventures.com/?p=5026

In India, you can find different types of roofing shingles – from traditional wood shingles to asphalt to modern day designer ones and even beyond! It isn’t as easy as it was back in the day when you just had to choose between ceramic, wood, and asphalt shingles! So it is important that you are acquainted with all these different types of roofing shingles so you can make an informed decision when the time comes to install them or replace the existing ones.

First things first, you need to know when and why you need new roofing before you learn the varieties of roof shingles. The one obvious reason would be damage due to fire, windstorm, and other similar natural causes. You may also need to replace your roof if you notice ceiling stains or water seepage. Sometimes, you may be able to find the source of the leak and try to fix it yourself but it’s best to leave some jobs to the experts. Most such leaks could be easily fixed if they’re just limited to a few areas. But if the leaks keep recurring, then a new roof is probably in order. Even if you don’t notice any obvious signs of damage, it is advisable to replace an old and out-of-warranty roof if it’s more than 20 years old.

Types of Roofing Shingles

Different types of shingles have different pros and cons. They also vary in price and longevity. So here’s an overview of the most popular types of roofing shingles to help you get acquainted with them.

3-Tab Asphalt Shingles

3-tab roof shingles are arguably the most common form of roofing shingles. These are flat asphalt shingles that consist of 3 distinct, equal-sized tabs and a recurring rectangular shape that is separated by slots. 3-tab shingles provide a beautiful symmetrical look across your roof. They are inexpensive and offer great value for money; costing somewhere between Rs 50 to 100 per square feet.

Pros of 3-tab asphalt shingles

  • They are among the most affordable shingles in the market
  • Installation process is very easy
  • Multiple colour options are available
  • They usually have a warranty period of 20 to 30 years

Cons of 3-tab asphalt shingles

  • They don’t last as long as other asphalt shingles but make up for it with the lower cost
  • They may be a little more susceptible than other shingles against forces of nature

Architectural Shingles

Architectural shingles fall in the premium tier of asphalt shingles. They are heavier than 3-tab shingles, thicker, and more durable. They consist of two layers of shingle pieces that are laminated together in order to provide a more dimensional look, which is why they are also known as dimensional or laminated shingles. Architectural shingles give a sculpted look to your roof and make it more aesthetically pleasing due to the variations in their shape and size. They cost about Rs. 75 to 125 per square feet. A special type of architectural shingles – COOL, could help make your property more energy-efficient by minimizing heat absorption. These variants have tremendous utility in a hot country like India.

Pros of architectural shingles

  • They have a longer manufacturer warranty and can easily last 30 to 50 years
  • Some brands like GAF produce architectural shingles that could resist higher wind speeds
  • They can withstand forces of nature pretty well
  • Easy installation process
  • Less likely to succumb to heat and time-intensive wear and tear
  • They are available in luxurious looking styles and multiple colour options.
  • They bring more interest and texture to a roof, which will increase curb appeal.

Cons of architectural shingles

  • They are a little more expensive than 3-tab shingles but affordable compared to many non-asphalt shingles
  • They are quite heavy, so homeowners must ensure that the structure of their house could support the extra weight.
  • Susceptible to damage from hail

Designer Shingles

Source : Gaf

Designer shingles are the crown jewel of a house. They are usually made of superior quality fiberglass or asphalt and come in a wide variety of colours and styles. Designer shingles offer the best of both worlds – they replicate the aesthetics of materials like tile, slate, or wood, while offering the practicality and affordability of asphalt shingles. They exude class and luxury and are the first choice for property owners with champagne taste.

Pros of designer shingles

  • They elevate a roof’s aesthetic appeal significantly
  • Durable, sturdy and last more than 30 years easily. You may never have to re-roof
  • They come with a lifetime warranty
  • Great choice for minimizing or hiding roof deficiencies
  • They offer better protection against the elements and a fantastic resale value

Cons of designer shingles

  • They are more expensive than most roofing shingles (around Rs 250-500 per square feet), but you get the value and performance that you’d expect for that money

Hip & Ridge Cap Shingles

Hip and ridge cap shingles are made of the same materials that regular shingles are made of and even provide the same look. But where they differ is that they are specially designed for one purpose – to cover and protect the hips and ridges of the roof, both of which are very high-stress areas that require more protection. Of course you can argue that regular shingles could be cut to size and used for the same purpose. But the problem with that is that regular shingles are usually thin and could crack over time. Hip and ridge caps are thicker and won’t be affected as much by time-driven wear.

Pros of hip & ridge cap shingles

  • They add a tremendous amount of aesthetic value to a roof.
  • They protect the hips and ridges of a roof against damage caused by moisture and natural elements
  • They complement 3-tab shingle roofs by adding depth and dimension to it

Cons of hip & ridge cap shingles

  • Buyers must ensure that hip and ridge cap shingles match their roofing shingles very closely. Even a slight mismatch could spoil the looks of your roof

Wooden Shingles

Wooden shingles are available in 2 style options – wood shake or wood shingles. Wood shingles come in perfect shapes while the shakes are usually sawn off and hand split for a more rustic look. Depending on the type of wood used, wood shingles are known to last for 15 to 50 years. Cedar-made wood shakes last 30 to 40 years. Wood shingles cost Rs 200 to 350 per square foot while the shakes cost a little more at Rs 350 to 650 per square foot.

Pros of wooden shingles

  • Wood shingle roofing looks and feels very natural, adding a nice rustic touch to a roof
  • They are weather resistant
  • Easy to install and repair

Cons of wooden shingles

  • They cost a lot more than asphalt shingles
  • Maintaining them is a hassle and involves a lot of time and money. Periodic moss removal and roof resealing are necessary.
  • Wood roofs are flammable even if they have been treated with chemicals to make them fire-resistant.

Slate Shingles

Source : The Spruce

Slate shingles are made from a specific kind of naturally occurring stone that is pulled from the earth and then worked into shingles. They are quite thin but feel bulky if you make the whole roof out of them. The 2 biggest benefits of installing slate shingles are its natural beauty and longevity. They cost about Rs 600 to 1100 per square foot.

Pros of slate shingles

  • Slate roofs last for a period of 60 to 150 years, which is the longest among all roofing options
  • They are extremely resistant to heat, hail, snow, and moisture.
  • Very environmentally-friendly roof. Virtually no pollution during its manufacturing.
  • Slate keeps the house at a consistent temperature, thereby reducing monthly heating and cooling bills.

Cons of slate shingles

  • This variant is among the most expensive shingles. Additionally, the installation expenses are quite substantial.
  • Most properties are just not strong enough to support their massive weight. You may need to reinforce your property with a stronger roof deck which again adds to the costs
  • In case a part of the roof breaks, you could find it extremely difficult to find a perfect-fit tile as the natural stone varies a lot in colour.
  • Finding a roofer to install slate shingles could be a challenge as very few are equipped and experienced enough to do the job

Tile Shingles

Tile shingles are among the most durable and costliest roofing shingle types you could install. The most common types of tile shingles are ceramic clay (terracotta), bituminous, metal, concrete, polymer sand, composite, and slate tiles. Installing them, however, is a headache and only the most skilled masons can do it perfectly. They are known to slip off in a decade if placed on a mortar bed. As far as the costs are concerned, you can expect to pay Rs 200 (concrete tiles) to Rs 1000 (slate tiles) per square foot.

Pros of tile shingles

  • Tile roofs last 50+ years easily and some installations may even last a century
  • You have a variety of options to choose from and low end tile shingles offer decent value for money

Cons of tile shingles

  • Installation is tricky and could cost you a premium. The longevity of the roofing heavily depends on the installation. Poor installation could incur massive losses.
  • You may need to strengthen your roof pre-installation to ensure it can bear the weight of tile roofing shingles. That again incurs additional costs

Metal Shingles

Metal shingles are considered to be the go-to option for ‘green’ consumers on account of their ability to reflect sunlight, thus lowering its absorption and reducing cooling costs. Metal shingles are available in predominantly 5 variants – aluminum, steel, copper, tin and zinc. And they last for an eternity! They cost between Rs 400 to 900 per square feet.

Pros of metal shingles

  • They are extremely sturdy and can withstand high temperatures, winds, and even hail storms.
  • They have tremendous longevity and can last for 50-75 years if maintained well
  • They are lightweight and leak proof
  • They are aesthetically pleasing

Cons of metal shingles

  • They cost substantially more than asphalt roofing shingles
  • It’s impossible to layer a metal roof on top of any other roof style so all previous materials will need to be completely removed. This increases the cost of installation.
  • Metal roofing shingles need to be supported by a certain rise that every roof may not have
  • Hail can cause dents on steel shingles. The sound of rain splashing on metal shingles is very loud and could be annoying for many.

Rubber Shingles

Rubber roof shingles look quite similar to asphalt shingles. They come in a number of variants, such as in TPO or PVC at the lower spectrum of the cost, and as EPDM membranes at the higher end. They cost anywhere from Rs. 300 to 650 per square foot, depending on the type of rubber membrane used.

Pros of rubber shingles

  • Easy installation and minimal maintenance
  • They can help reduce energy consumption and lower your energy bills

Cons of rubber shingles

  • Though they look like asphalt shingles but they are far more expensive

Things To Consider Before You Choose Roofing Shingles

Your choice of roofing shingles is contingent on factors beyond aesthetics and price. Here’s an overview of 3 such crucial considerations.

Roof Components

Local business code requirements, material compatibility, and warranties may play a role in your choice of roofing shingles. For instance, tile, metal, or slate shingles may be compatible only with certain types of roofing underlayment due to fire and high-temperature risks. Besides, certain roofing materials may need reinforced structural elements, which will again add to the roofing cost. Factor these parameters into your final decision.

Solar Panels

If you want to add solar panels to your new roof, make sure to verify if the solar panel installation would void the warranty of the shingle you’re considering. Also, It’s highly recommended to install solar panels over the top of full shingle coverage, as it would double the protective layer against natural elements.

Warranty

Most shingle manufacturers offer a lifetime warranty on their product. But in the roofing industry, a lifetime doesn’t always mean a lifetime. It’s more like 10 or 15 years; that is how long manufacturers would reimburse the full cost of the roof to the original owner for replacing defective shingles under the warranty. Thereafter, you’ll only be reimbursed for your shingles’ depreciated value.

Also, a roofing warranty won’t necessarily cover damage from certain acts of God. The manufacturer could also refuse to pay if they are unhappy with your ventilation! So make sure you cover all these grey areas in the warranty before you settle on a new roofing system.

Estimating Cost Of A New Roofing Installation

Replacing a roof isn’t a dirt cheap job. And it isn’t a DIY thing either; you’ll need experts to install the new roof. So it will be worthwhile to have a look at how you could estimate the costs.

Usually, manufacturers price the roofing project by the square (usually 100 sq. ft area). In order to estimate how many squares you’ll eventually need, find the area of each roof section by multiplying its length and width. Add the areas of each section to arrive at the total roofing area. Also add 10% to allow for waste. Finally, keep an additional stock of shingles on hand for minor repairs. Now divide this total by 100 and multiply it by the cost per square to arrive at a fair estimate of the roofing shingles cost.

For instance, a 1500 square-foot roof would need about 2,000 square feet total of roofing shingles including the wastage allowance and spares for future repairs. So in this case, you will need 20 squares (2000/100) to cover your roof. Ask for the square cost and multiply it by 20 and you’ll have a reasonable cost estimate. Bear in mind that installation costs would be over and above this figure.

How to Choose the Color of Roofing Shingles https://www.shibamventures.com/14-roofing-options-for-a-bungalow-2-2-2-2/ Sat, 31 Aug 2019 04:54:11 +0000 https://www.shibamventures.com/?p=3978

Your roof is one of the most important parts of the exterior of your home or construction project and choosing the right color for your shingles will ensure that your home looks beautiful. Most good quality shingles last a long time. To make an informed decision, you should consider the following before choosing the right shingle colour for you.

  • Home style
  • Look that you want to achieve
  • Climate where you live

You can do this by understanding the following concepts:

  1. Choose a color that pairs well with the color of your house.Shingles can create contrast with your siding materials, or they can blend in with the other design features of your home. If you want to go the traditional route, stick with gray, brown, or black shingles. For a contrasting pop of color, opt for reddish-orange shades or lighter tan colors.[1]
  • You can also choose to incorporate a mix of colors, like gray and black or tan and brown shingles for a staggered effect.
  • Siding and Shingle Color Combinations:
    • If your house is white, gray, yellow, or blue, stick with gray or black shingles to create a stately-looking contrast.
    • For red or yellow brick houses, choose between black, brown, and gray shingles.
    • With natural siding, like stone or earth-toned vinyl, opt for brown or tan shingles to coordinate with the exterior of the home.
  1. Accentuate the architectural style of your home with your shingles.Drive around several neighborhoods to get an idea of what color of roofing would look best on your home. Look for houses with a similar shape, exterior, and color as yours. Note which roofing and siding pairings seem to look the most appealing to you, and search online for houses that are architecturally similar to yours.
  • For example, a ranch house might look good with a combination of colors while a traditional colonial would benefit from shingles with one solid color.
  • A Spanish style home might look good with reddish clay-colored roof shingles which would mimic traditional clay roofing tiles, for example.
  1. Install a “cool roof” to make your home more energy efficient.Opting for an energy efficient roof can lower the temperature of your attic by 20–40 °F (−7–4 °C). If you live in a warm climate, install this type of roof to help lower your electricity bills and improve the longevity of your roofing materials.
  • If you don’t want to install a true cool roof, remember that white or light shingles reflect sunlight and help keep the temperature of your home down. Dark shingles absorb heat and will help homes in colder climates stay warm. They also help melt snow and ice from your roof.
  • Understanding Cool Roofing

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a cool roof is any form of roofing that is designed to reflect more light than traditional roofing. Some methods of cool roofing involve using reflective paint, installing a covering for the shingles, or simply replacing dark shingles with light shingles.

  1. Check rules about shingle colors if you live in a residential neighborhood. If you have a local homeowners association, read their rules carefully to make sure your choice of roofing color does not violate any regulations. Even if you don’t have set rules to follow, think about how your roof will look alongside your neighbor’s house.
  • If many of the homes in your neighborhood have the same style of roof, it might be a good sign that that color works well with those types of houses.
  1. Talk to Shibam Ventures, a certified roofer or contractor about the shingles. Send photos of the exterior of your home to a Shibam Ventures. Browse options from our PDF catalogues, or take shingle samples home with you to see them in person. If you have a picture of the type of look that you want to achieve, bring that along with you to give them an idea of what you want.

    Guide on different roofing patterns https://www.shibamventures.com/14-roofing-options-for-a-bungalow-2-2-2/ Sat, 31 Aug 2019 04:41:16 +0000 https://www.shibamventures.com/?p=3973

Different shingle patterns serve various aesthetic and practical purposes. It helps to take some time to understand and choose the right pattern for your home or construction project for the best roofing result. The roof not only acts as the prime protective shield for a home but can also add to the home’s positive environment.

    1. Make a statement with the shingle design or shape.Consult with a shingle designer about incorporating a design into your shingles. Try staggering blues with taupes and browns for a natural-toned roof with a cooler undertone. Ask about scalloping or layering to draw attention to your roof. Shibam Ventures provides free advice to help you in this process.
    • Keep in mind that high-contrast colors, like gray and cream together, will highlight features of your home while low-contrast colors, like tan and brown together, tend to hide defects.

    1. Choose clay, slate, or wooden shingles for an a unique look.Today, shingles are available in a variety of different materials. Visit a store to get a feel for all of the options, and don’t be afraid to choose a shingle type other than asphalt. Keep in mind that asphalt shingles tend to hold up well over time in various climates, while materials like clay and slate can break easily.
      • Remember that shingles made of different materials will usually require an additional installation fee, due to their fragile nature.

    Exploring Different Shingle Materials

    • Clay: Clay tiles are traditionally shades of red or tan. Most clay tiles are fired in a kiln before being installed, which ensures that they will hold their color for a long time.
    • Slate: This natural rock can be cut into thin shingles and used for roofing material. Slate tends to be quite expensive, and the colors are limited to shades of gray.
    • Wood: Wooden shingles, or shakes, are made from cedar, redwood, or pine trees. They tend to have a natural brown color and are popular in areas of California and the Northwest United States. Wooden shingles are prohibited in some areas due to low levels of fire safety.
    1. Opt for a color that blends with your siding to make the house seem larger. Low-contrast roofs are ideal for toning down the appearance of your home and making smaller houses look taller. Choose a color that appears to be a continuation of the siding to draw the eye upward. Avoid harsh colors like white or black, which can break the home into sections.[8]
    • For example, if you have a ranch house with brown stone siding, choose shades of brown and taupe for the shingles.
    • For brick houses, this might mean incorporating shades of brown and red in your roof. For houses with natural tones on the outside, stick with gray, taupe, and brown for the roof.

    Tips to choosing Metal Roofing Shingles: https://www.shibamventures.com/14-roofing-options-for-a-bungalow-2-2/ Sat, 31 Aug 2019 04:34:22 +0000 https://www.shibamventures.com/?p=3968

Metal roofing shingles have been popular in the design and construction of roofs since decades. They offer designers, architects, and builders a roofing solution that is highly durable, yet also lightweight and fireproof.

Modern roof materials are a lot different from the usual corrugated tin roofs on stores that often come to mind when you mention metal roofing. Today’s metal roofs serve as high-tech answers to the need for long-lasting roofing that looks at home on a house. In addition, it’s easy enough to replicate historically accurate metal shingles, which comes in handy if you’re tackling a complex restoration project.

Whatever the roofing plan, it’s very important to know how to choose the correct materials for your project, so your creation or renovation of old-world charm won’t deteriorate over time.

Here are three tips for choosing sheet metal roof shingles.

    1. Ask Yourself If a Sheet Metal Roof Is for You
The basic grades of roofing asphalt are:

Before actually choosing a kind of metal shingle, it’s more important to first determine if metal roofing is what your construction project requires. While metal shingles are more expensive than asphalt shingles, metal shingles actually lasts longer and is more wind resistant. Depending on the slope of your building, you may also want to consider if metal shingles is even a viable option.

In terms of the quality of material, many sheet metal roof shingles can be made from a wide variety of metals (all which come with their own pros, cons, and costs). Steel roofs are the most common and come with various zinc coatings or painted finishes, while copper roofs are perhaps the most expensive, being installed unfinished and weathering to a protective green patina over time. Most metal roof options are available in sheet or shingle form and can easily be installed hidden or exposed.

In addition, sheet metal roofs may be made from recycled materials and can most commonly be recycled when replaced. They are fairly durable, lightweight, and offer good resistance against fire and wind. Metal roofs are a great choice for any building project, but be sure it’s the option that makes the most sense in terms of budget and design.

So, you’ve decided to go with a metal roof, but what metal specifically? As previously mentioned, metal roof sheets and shingles come in a variety of metal compositions. From sturdy to supple, affordable to expensive, the materials that make up your chosen metal shingles can affect design choices both practically and aesthetically.

The most common (and affordable) options are aluminium shingles and steel-based metal roofing shingle materials; using copper and alloys shingles tends to cost much more. The “cheaper” options are not only economical, they also finish very well and are durable. However, aluminum is a softer material, thus, it dents more easily and is actually more expensive than steel (which can be galvanized to strengthen it). In addition, aluminium shingles won’t corrode like steel if the finish is compromised by the elements.

    Shingle Style

Metal shingles are a go-to design choice because they can be fashioned into just about any shape to fit your project needs. From faux wood reproductions to Spanish mission tiles, coated steel or aluminum shingles can be painted and formed into almost any style.

You better believe that a lot of hard work goes into replicating texture and look when it comes to metal shingle roofing materials. Whether it’s layering finishes or adding custom granulated-stone topcoats, certain shingle styles are hard to distinguish from the real thing! Best of all, these custom styles and finishes don’t have to cost you an arm and a leg. In fact, most metal shingle systems are manufactured in large panels and are designed for quick installation. However, not all roofs are made equal, so you have to make sure to use the proper techniques or hire accredited professionals to install your roof.

    The basics of asphalt roofing https://www.shibamventures.com/14-roofing-options-for-a-bungalow-2/ Sat, 24 Aug 2019 12:40:35 +0000 https://www.shibamventures.com/?p=3950

Beginning with the marketing of roll roofing, the asphalt roofing industry has grown steadily through the years to the point where today it is overwhelmingly accepted as the leading supplier of roofing shingles.

Most of the asphalt in the India is used in paving or roofing. Asphalt roofing shingles and systems include shingles and roll roofing, ply felt, built-up roofing (BUR) systems, saturated felt used as underlayments for shingles and modified systems. Shingles being the most successful options of them all.

Product and roofing system innovations have followed. The first self-sealing asphalt shingle was introduced in 1953. Then, in the 1970s, multi-layer or laminated shingles were introduced.

The development of fiberglass-based asphalt shingles, another 1970s innovation, has resulted in asphalt shingle shingles with an even higher fire rating. And, through the years up to the present time, asphalt shingles are the most widely used roof covering for new home construction and remodeling — used on four out of five U.S. homes. Indian homes use Asphalt Shingles as good replacements for clay tiles on the roof.

    Roofing Grades
The basic grades of roofing asphalt are:

    1. Saturant-grade asphalt, a nonoxidized or oxidized asphalt used to manufacture saturated felt piles used in the construction of BUR systems, organic felt shingles, and other roofing materials, such as roll roofing;
    2. Coating-grade asphalt, an oxidized asphalt used to manufacture roofing materials for a variety of roofing systems, such as asphalt shingles, polymer-modified bitumen roofing, reinforcing and underlayment felts, and roll roofing product.
    3. Mopping-grade asphalt, an oxidized asphalt that is melted and used in the construction of BUR and modified bitumen systems.

    Asphalt Shingles

Popular in the early years of the 20th century, fulfilling a need for an economical fire-resistant roof covering. Over the years, asphalt shingles have increasingly become recognized as an economical, fire-safe and aesthetic product with a combination of beauty, durability, longevity and value.

    1. The “standard” asphalt shingle is the square butt strip shingle, elongated in shape and available with one or three tabs. This product is made of a base mat or organic material (cellulose fibers) or inorganic material (glass fibers). The organic mat is saturated and coated with asphalt and then surfaced with ceramic-coated opaque mineral granules.
    2. The saturating process is not necessary for fiberglass-based asphalt shingles, which require only a coating asphalt. The coating asphalt provides weatherproofing qualities. The mineral granules protect the shingles from the sun’s ultraviolet rays and give the shingles color and added protection against fire.

    The Manufacturing Process

The manufacture of asphalt roofing shingles is a continuous process performed on a roofing machine that begins at one end with a roll of core material and concludes at the other end with the finished product. This sequence of operations builds the product up in stages, adding materials along the way and monitoring their operations.

    The Advantages of Asphalt Shingles

The dominance of asphalt roofing shingles through the years has not evolved as a matter of chance. It is based on proven product performance that goes beyond the basic roofing requirements of providing a covering that shields the building’s inhabitants from the weather. The characteristics have earned asphalt roofing its leading position include the following:

    1. Weather Resistance: Asphalt roofing shingles are proven to resist sunlight, heat, cold, water and ice.
    2. Fire Resistance: Asphalt roofing shingles are manufactured to comply with ASTM International and/or Underwriters Laboratories (UL) standards for fire resistance.
    3. Wind Resistance: Asphalt roofing shingles comply with the wind-resistant standards of Underwriters Laboratories.
    4. Economy: Efficient, high-volume production plus relatively low cost of application result in economies that are difficult for competing roofing materials to match. Moderate installed costs combined with long service life gives asphalt roofing shingles a very low annual or life-cycle cost.
    5. Ease of Application: Asphalt shingles is considered to be the easiest of all standard roofing materials to apply.
    6. Adaptability: Because of their flexibility and strength, asphalt roofing shingles can be applied on a wide variety of roof styles.
    7. Aesthetics: Asphalt roofing shingles are available in many appealing colors, shapes and dimensional depths that provide bold roof appearances. The wide range of asphalt roofing shingles introduced in recent years offer much greater flexibility in choosing the appearance of a building’s exterior than is available with most other types of roofing material.
    8. Style Suitability: Asphalt roofing shingles are  completely “at home” with most architectural styles, whether contemporary, modern or traditional.
    9. Low Maintenance: Properly chosen and applied, asphalt roofing shingles require little or no upkeep and are easily repaired, if damaged.

Here’s an impressive number: stone-coated roofing tiles resist driving rain, as well as high wind pressures over 120 mph. This is due to the complete interlocking of individual panels. By contrast, aluminum roofs have to contend with blow-offs caused by wind uplift, necessitating immediate roof repairs. This is something you can avoid with stone-coated roofs.

    Distinctive Appearance

Homeowners who invest in stone-coated roofing systems give an immediate boost to their home’s overall curb appeal. It’s remarkable fade-resistant, so you will have a fresh-looking roof for many years. The stone chip coating also provides natural weatherproofing and soundproofing qualities.

India is a country with a warm and sometimes humid and wet climate. The heat and UV rays causes a lot of damage to the roofing materials. Here, we take you through the materials that are considered best for roofing in India.

    ROOF SHINGLES IN INDIA:

For Bungalows and cottages, roofs play a very important role for both usability and aesthetics. They are the most accepted option for roofing in the Indian Sub Continent. Roofing in Kerela and other states have crowned Shingles as the best roofing alternative. Roof shingles are a roof covering consisting of individual overlapping elements. These elements are typically flat, rectangular shapes laid in courses from the bottom edge of the roof up, with each successive course overlapping the joints below. Shingles are made of various materials such as wood, slate, flagstone, metal, plastic, and composite materials such as fibre cement and asphalt shingles.
